The Story

A small oil landscape — a houseboat crossing a Himalayan lake beneath distant snow peaks — had darkened badly under a thick, yellowed varnish, and its ornate gilt frame had dulled to a grimy blue-grey.

Cleaning was tested carefully before it proceeded, distinguishing the aged varnish from the paint beneath; the frame was treated separately, its gilding cleaned and consolidated rather than replaced.

Beneath the discoloured varnish, the scene's original light returned — the lake, the mountains, and the boat's red canopy reading with a clarity the painting hadn't shown in years, now held in a frame that matches it.

The Damage
A thick, yellowed varnish and a grimy, dulled gilt frame had flattened the painting's original luminosity — the distant snow peaks and lake barely legible beneath the discolouration.
The Process
Solubility testing followed by controlled varnish reduction and surface cleaning, with the frame separately cleaned and its gilt surface consolidated and revived.
The Outcome
The Himalayan lake scene regained its depth and light — snow peaks, water, and the trees framing the houseboat all reading with their original clarity, held in a frame as bright as the repainting beneath it.
