Paper Conservation
A particular specialism. Paper is a network of cellulose fibres that reacts to every shift in humidity, temperature, and light — and each medium drawn or printed on it asks for its own care.
Our approach
Ink, watercolour, chalk, pastel, and gouache each respond to moisture and solvents differently, so treatment begins with identifying exactly what's on the sheet before anything is tested on it — foxing, acidity, brittleness, and water staining all call for their own approach.
Dry-surface cleaning, aqueous washing, de-acidification, and humidification are used where the medium allows, combined with fine tear-mending and, where a sheet has failed structurally, lining or backing for support.
Losses are filled and inpainted only within their own boundaries, and the work is finished into archival, acid-free housing or conservation mounting — stabilised for handling, storage, and display, with a written proposal agreed before treatment begins.
