The Story
A rapid life study — a standing figure drawn in sanguine and grey wash, arms raised behind the head — arrived on a sheet that had warmed and darkened unevenly, its surface dulled by grime and age.
Red chalk is soft and easily disturbed, so cleaning proceeded dry and slow, tested pass by pass before it touched the drawn line itself.
With the discolouration reduced and the sheet flattened, the paper cooled to an even tone again — and the figure's confident, gestural line read with the immediacy the artist set down.
- The Damage
- The sheet had darkened and warmed to an uneven brown, with surface grime and general discolouration dulling the paper and flattening the drawing's contrast.
- The Process
- Gentle dry-surface cleaning and controlled reduction of the discolouration — worked slowly to protect the friable red-chalk medium — followed by careful humidification and flattening.
- The Outcome
- The paper returned to a cooler, cleaner tone, and the red-chalk figure regained its contrast and immediacy against it.
